Volunteer gratitude, a community member responds to the “we were bored” explanation.

You can’t do Restorative Justice without community members.  I believe they bring in collective wisdom.  I train our volunteers on aspects of Restorative Justice, and request they show up with their best selves.
I focus on Restorative Justice Accountability as being:

acknowledging you caused harm
understanding that harm from anothers point of view
recognizing where you had choices
take steps [...]

Restorative Justice is a Social Justice catalyst!

I had the good fortune of speaking on a panel.  The focus was social justice, we were given the task to define this, and explain it relevant to our Pledge of Allegiance ” . . . with liberty and justice for all . . . “.  I was in the middle of the line up so [...]

The purpose of ‘kooky’ in Restorative Justice Circles.

People that participate in Circles with me, become really honest about what they thought at first.  This honest testimony about what people thought about a Circle at first, and what they think now is an endorsement for the process.
The most recent description like this used the term ” kooky“.  It’s been mentioned that they seemed wierd.  One advocate [...]

Just enough trauma, to validate my trauma knowledge and understand victims more.

I was cleaning out my garage yesterday.  Up in the rafters was my daughters old metal scooter, like the one pictured here.  As I was working hard, getting things re-arranged to get my car to fit.  I was clunked in the head, hard, it hurt.
I saw the scooter hit the ground, so knew it was that.  It [...]

Restorative Justice allows us to speak with wisdom and real-ness.

One of the phrases I typically say in trainings:  “Nothing new under the sun”.  My point is two-fold.  First Restorative Justice isn’t all that orginal,  its more of the orginal kindness people needed to survive.  It’s as old as the sun itself.  I believe Restorative Justice reconnects us to the past way of relating.
I make [...]

“no one person owns the truth” an aspect of restorative philosophy.

When facilitating a Circle, I try to always point out the Center.  I explain that we all see the same items, but we each have a different ‘perspective’.
Depending on the purpose of the Circle, I get more into explaining how no one person owns the truth.  When people sit around in Circle, in the round [...]

Infusing Restorative Justice into the mindset of a new employee.

The staff at SCVRJP went out for lunch today.  The newest member of the team demonstrated the ability to “see” Restorative Justice.  At the newly opened Jimmy John’s there was a sign that so good, I had to get a picture with my cell phone.

In case you can’t read the photo:

Proper Apologies have three parts.  [...]

Examples of stories, and the power of story.

I love my kid.  She’s 17 and a senior in high school.  She’s my only.  It’s been the two of us.  One of our special things, is my work.  She was in her first circle at 9 years old.  I held a girls circle for almost a year, her and a few other teen girls.  [...]

Being a good Circlekeeper is about facilitating your own disappearance.

A few years ago, I was kind of dating someone and I just stopped calling and emailing him.  A few weeks later I got an angry email, suggesting I go to Vegas with my “disappearing” act.
I still do a great disappearing act, now it’s just in Restorative Justice Circle process.
A ‘circlekeeper’ is the person, or [...]
