Overcoming the feedback that I couldn’t write a story.

One of my college dreams was to be a TV news reporter.  It was maybe my 2nd or 3rd major in college, and I felt “at home” as a Mass Comm (communications) major.

I wanted to be the talented, smart and pretty woman in front of the camera.  I worked really hard at writing and developing [...]

Helping others is hard work, keep your focus, imitation is easy.

This piece of wisdom has stayed with me for nearly a decade.  I had the opportunity to someone a ride.  She was really a strong leader and she brought a great deal forward in gender-based responses, both in criminal justice and human services.  I guess if they give an award in her name, that’s probably [...]

Does ’shame’ get the results we want?

Why are speeding tickets and court matters in the paper as public record?
Is it ’stockade’ thinking?  What was the rationale of using a stockade, did it work?  In Herbert Packer’s book from 1968 “The Limits of the Criminal Sanction”  he writes about the formal system having two competing priorities 1.) deter crime and 2.) due process.  [...]

Why do people think shame and punishment works?

The great debate about Youth Court has been in front of me again, so I sent the following email to my board.  Hoping they will pass it on.  If you want to see the study I attached to the email, It’s posted in an earlier blog, Here.
The question of Teen Court/Youth Court has come up [...]

A lesson in slowing down my thoughts and a focus on the positive.

The last few months I have been forced to focus on stress reduction.  I had a bad case of hives from January until April.  Let me stay focused on this post by saying, the allergist said they weren’t hives.  So stress reduction efforts.
On thing I have been doing is reading about meditation.  I wish I could [...]

The conversation is the relationship.

I once heard something about our conversations are our relationships.  I think it was regarding differences between women and men.  I put that information in the “ruminate” area of my brain.  I wasn’t sure if I believed that statement and over time, I think it deserves some serious consideration.
I started testing it with my last [...]

Please, prove me wrong!

Yesterday two articles on the front page of the Pioneer Press caught my attention.  The first Public Safety will suffer . . . from budget cuts.  The article explains that minor case (shoplifting/underage drinking) won’t get prosecuted.  Civil and family cases will get delayed.
The second article by Ruben Rosario reminds lawmakers, to fund this system.  Which really [...]

People will take ’shots’ at you and it’s about them.

I sent an email asking  for my handmixer back.
I got a scathing response.  I’m choosing emotional maturity and understanding that people can have different views, perspectives, feelings and experiences of the same situation.  I’ve got some ‘energy’ about it and am going to blog on it.  I wrote two blogs yesterday and didn’t post either one, [...]

Teen Court – Youth Court :(

I don’t like Teen Court or Youth Court.
I typically don’t focus on the negative.  I’ve discussed this enough and had enough experiences that my opinion is formed.  I can blog and say I don’t like them.  I will tell you why.
In Wisconsin, when a  juvenile is processed in the FORMAL circuit court process, there is NO [...]
